Just FYI, my alter ego posted a blog over at SF Novlists today on my take on anthologies called "To Theme or Not to Theme."

The question I ask there, I'd also like to ask here. Themed anthologies are becoming quite popular among the paranormal romance reading set. What do you think of them? Are you a short story reader in general? What do you think might account for the sudden popularity of these kinds of anthologies?

Oh, [insert shameless plug here], if you *do* like them, I have a short story called "Fire and Ice and Linguine for Two" now available in Many Bloody Returns edited by by Charlaine Harris and Toni L. P. Kelner (Ace Hardcover, Sept. 2007, 978-0441015221).

P.S. In case it's not obvious with the vampire theme and whatnot, the story of Tate's takes place in the Garnetverse.  Actually, it happens AFTER the book that's not out yet, but there are no spoilers for book #3.

In MANY BLOODY RETURNS (anthology) which is coming out next week, Tate has  a short story called "Fire and Ice and Linguine for Two" which involves Sebastian and Garnet.  Below is a new review from Library Journal.

Here's the text (and look, I'm -- okay, she's--mentioned!!!!)

Many Bloody Returns: Tales of Birthdays with Bite. Ace: Berkley, dist. by Penguin Group (USA). Sept. 2007. c.368p. ed. by Charlaine Harris & Toni L.P. Kelner. ISBN 978-0-441-01522-1. $24.95. FANTASY

In this anthology, 13 talented writers have found clever ways to intertwine two seemingly disparate themes, vampires and birthdays. Christopher Golden's "The Mournful Cry of Owls" tells of a mother who, on her daughter's birthday, must explain the strange truth of the girl's ancestry. In Kelley Armstrong's mesmerizing "Twilight," the rebirth date of the vampire Cassandra has arrived. Now she has one unpleasant task to perform. And in "Fire and Ice and Linguini for Two," Tate Halloway writes a funny, romantic piece about the vampire Sebastian reluctantly celebrating his birthday, although he believes it cursed. Some stories are better than others, but all are entertaining and worth reading. This excellent collection will appeal to the growing legion of paranormal fans. Recommended for public libraries.—Patricia Altner, BiblioInfo.com , Columbia, MD

P.S. Later I'm planning on posting about Mason's and my adventure stargazing last night with Rachel.  We saw Mars!

Last night's reading was a mitigated success... thanks to the SF Meet-up folks, most of the seats were warmed by bodies, but half-way through "Fire and Ice and Linguine for Two" I discovered that I was missing a page.  Hard enough that I had to cover for HER, since she's too self-important to come to these things herself.  (Truth of the matter is that I haven't gotten around to getting a new dress for the season, and, well, I've gained a few pounds so the other alternate ones don't fit any more.  So I did a Lemony Snicket and told everyone that Tate couldn't make it due to a series of unfortunate events.)   At any rate, I stumbled through the mishap with what I hope was my usual charm and grace.  The audience was very forgiving and kind, partly, I think as I knew nearly everyone there.  I also had a chance to show off HER copy of the British version of DEAD SEXY, as a carton of books arrived from my agent last night.

Otherwise, I'm frantically getting ready to head down to WisCON.  I should email the other Wyrdsmiths and see if we want to do some kind of group con report on our blog.  I'm planning on bringing my laptop, so maybe if we can find a wireless spot, I can send along updates AS THE NEWS BREAKS.  (!)

Mason is demanding I read to him, so I must go for now.

When Mason was just born Shawn and I had a discussion about what we wanted to do about Mother’s Day.  I thought long and hard about this and decided that I was far too selfish to want to share the day with Shawn.  I told her she could have Mother’s Day, and I would have Ima’s Day, which we decided was the anniversary of my legal adoption of Mason – December 5.

So, for Mother’s Day, I did what I saw a lot of dad’s doing.  Mason and I went out for cinnamon rolls (Shawn’s favorite) and then mostly let Shawn nap and sleep in.  Yesterday was a good day for sleeping in, actually.  It was windy and a bit cloudy.  Shawn slept on and off for most of the day, actually.  (She LOVES sleeping.)  Mason and I amused ourselves with Twister (a game we bought at Goodwill on Saturday) along with a number of other great board games – Jenga, Battleship, Hi-Ho Cherry Oh, and Parcheesi.  He’s a little too young for some of the games, but we played around with them anyway.

On Saturday, I gave a talk at the Midwest Fiction Writers in support of Her newest release in which I managed to come out of the broom closet (and possible the regular closet, as well, though I was much more subtle with that information.)  As someone said to me after a talk, “If you want to silence a room, just say Wicca loudly.”

What happened was that Emma Holly asked what kind of research I did about the witchcraft in Dead Sexy.  I looked her straight in the eye and said, “None.  I practice Wicca.  I’m a witch.  So, as it happens I have a lot of books on the subject around that house.”  (nervous laughter.)

You could have heard a pin drop.

What’s strange is that I almost NEVER come out of the broom closet.  I will tend to tell people that I’m a lesbian at the drop of a hat, but a witch?  Almost never.  I haven’t ever officially come out as a lesbian at my local RWA chapter, because, well, frankly, in this case I don’t think my orientation is anyone’s business but my own.  I don’t actually hide the fact, though – as I often talk about “my partner” followed by the pronoun “she.”  I’m sure everyone knows, but I just never use the L-word.

Anyway, that’s not the issue.  As I’m out in most aspects of my life, I don’t feel bad about being somewhat circumspect in my career as a romance writer.  Apparently, I’ve decided that, instead, I’m going to tell them all that I’m a witch.

The funny part is that I kept stumbling onward … as I often do – having done this once before in a human sexuality class when a professor asked me how I reconciled being a lesbian with my spirituality [at a Lutheran college that I’m an alum of] and I replied, “What’s to reconcile? I was raised UU, which has always been open to gays and lesbians and now I worship the Goddess and She loves me.”  Oops.  Again with the pin dropping.  Anyway, I ended up talking about how in the third Garnet Lacey book in which Garnet starts a new coven.  I told the MFW ladies that I used that opportunity to play with people’s stereotypes about what a witch should look like.

Afterwards a woman came up to me and told me that she appreciated my comments about how witches can look normal, and said, “Merry Meet.”

Our secret handshake.

It was a cool moment.  But, I suspect my talk will be the buzz for a little while at least.

Just a quick note to say Happy Beltane and/or May Day to those of you who celebrate it -- and what the hell, even for those of you who don't, just go ahead and have a good day, anyway.

Also, today is the debut of HER newest Dead Sexy.

I'll be celebrating a number of things tonight. Not the least of which is that I finished the revisions/polish on Her third book -- which is going through a bit of a title connundrum right now.  It's been all sorts of things-- Bloody Smashing, Bloody Charming, and now, perhaps, Drop-Dead Gorgeous.  I'm fond of Bloody Charming, but it doesn't have Dead in the title like the other two.  The problem, of course, is that every other paranormal romance writer in the universe has used up every clever pun on dead that you could think of.  If anyone out there has clever title ideas, I'm all ears.

Unfortunately, my celebration is going to be somewhat muted as I'm sick (and alone).  I caught a cold Mason had been incubating.  Normally, these sorts of things get passed to Shawn who has one of the weakest constitutions in the known universe.  I used to tease her that while I had a constitution 18+, she had a 2.  This time I missed my saving throw and ended up on the fumble chart.  (Oh, and if you followed all that you're at least as big a geek as I am.)  The point is, I'm sick as a dog.  Much snuffling and hacking to be had.  Whee.

As for the alone bit, Shawn is off on a work conference in Arizona for four days and I'm getting a taste of what life would be like if I were a single parent -- without day care.

Oh, and I'm bleeding.

Poor me!
