So I stopped by Dreamhaven yesterday afternoon after a vet appointment (Ms. Deilha has an eye infection, poor thing,) and I picked up a few more Secret Invasion titles. As you all probably know much was made by the mainstream press about the Captain Britian title because of a cameo by the real-life prime minister of England. However, unlike the death of Captain of America, the death of Captain Britian didn't receive much fanfare (probably because Britian went out a hero, rather than being shot by his own government*.)

But the Captain Britian title jumped the shark for me when in this latest issue, the team goes to Avalon and revives not ONLY Merlin himself, but, it appears, have revived an mystical amalgam of Captain Britian and KING ARTHUR. Now, I have to admit that all this has a literary history -- in a time of great need we're supposed to hear drums rolling across England, and Arthur will rise again... but, but... I don't know, it was a suspender snapping moment for me.

Between that and the Mighty Hercules title wherein we discover the dog is a Skrull... I'm losing my respect for the extended bits of this storyline.

However, I did enjoy the newest Secret Invasion (or maybe New Avengers) title where the Avengers are still fighting in the savage land (time seems to have collapsed for them) and we finally get answers to what's up with the Captain America on board the Skrull invasion ship and I actually sort of liked the existential struggle the poor Skrull warrior was going through, and, frankly, I've appreciated that this seems to be the biggest flaw in the Skrull invasion plan -- that so many of their key players really BELIEVE that they are the humans they have been sent to replace. Similarly, I enjoyed the last of the Fantastic Four mini-arch with the Skrull ex-girlfriend of Johnny's deciding she can't fight the Skrull war either. So there are some poignant moments.

But generally, this whole "Marvel event" isn't really resonating with me. Manhattan does seem to be being destroyed (and thank GOD for Ms. Marvel or we'd have been destroyed a long time ago.)

Anyway, we're off to a friends' cabin for a weekend of sun, swimming, and fun. This has been a most marvelous summer. See y'all on the flipside.

* That's how it first appeared, but, of course, it has since been revealed that Agent 13 was under the influence of Dr. Faustus (under the direction of Red Skull).
