Because everyone needs a regal-looking LEGO (space?) chicken or two:

I was inspired to build this fine-looking bird after looking through LEGO PLAY BOOK: Ideas to Bring Your Bricks to Life's "barnyard animals" section.  The book was a gift to us from Kelly McCullough of Wyrdsmiths, who has also, in the past, donated some of his LEGOs to Mason's gigantic collection.  So, thanks, Kelly!  This chicken is for you.

I didn't write a word yesterday. Instead, I slept. As luck would have it, Mason is on the up-swing, which is, of course, why I started to get the crummies. His energy level is up; mine crashed.

Typical.

But I have a bit of a mutant healing factor (or, in a different lexicon, a constiution of 18++) and if I give myself time to sleep just as a cold/virus is coming on, I can usually beat it in a matter of days, rather than weeks. Right now I seem to already have moved (fingers crossed!) into the last stages, where the cough has settled deep in my throat. With any luck, I'll be well enough to go to Wyrdsmiths this Thursday.

The funny thing about sleeping yesterday is that my brain felt guilt about not writing. I snuggled into bed insanely early 5:00 pm and slept until 7:30 am this morning. Some of that was fitful, what with my coughing, Shawn's sneezing and coughing, and Mason's hacking. Sometime around 1:00 am last night, I woke up and couldn't fall back asleep. I had a thought about a plot point in some previous stuff I've written, and realized that one of the characters made the wrong sacrifice. I'm going to go back and fix that today. Alas, I still don't have a clear vision of how the final showdown is going to play out, but maybe something will occur to me during the day today as I won't be able to get writing done until after everyone's asleep tonight after 8:00pm.

Since Mason is feeling better and we're taking Shawn in to work late today, he and I are going to head off to the Sprawl of America. He's earned enough LEGO money (he's been getting vouchers when he puts himself to sleep, something we've been working on) so he can buy something he's be anxious to get (and is now on sale!): The Imperial AT-ST. We still only have three legs of the motorized AT-AT together, but when it's all done I hope to post another YouTube video of our family entertainment.

Since posting my bit about all our family illnesses and accidents I've heard from not only those who commented here, but a whole lot of other people who have had anything ranging from pnumonia to a daughter that had to be hospitalized. Is there something in the stars?

That's my theory, anyway. So here's the YouTube video of Shawn, Mason and I dragging the LEGO Sandcrawler across our living room floor to where the mini-figs of Uncle Owen and Luke await in their landspeeder (which we cobbled together from an old instruction booklet belonging to my nephew Jon). Shawn, Mason and I do a lovely rendition of the "Star Wars" theme (or not) as a musical backdrop, and Mason is the assist for the droids, once they reach the landspeeder. Great art, it is not; great fun? Hell yes.

Mason, of course, immediately disassembled the Sandcrawler, including, much to Shawn's dismay, the garbage can droid that came with the set.

As previously reported, Mason is an odd kid. With some things, he's very much a "collector." He loves to build his LEGO sets, but he ADORES taking them apart and throwing all the various pieces into the gigantic, plastic tub we keep all this stuff in. Rather ironically, it's Shawn and I that love to play with the sets, so our compromise is that we get to take movies and/or photos of the sets as Mason finishes them. So, that's how this little gem of a video came into being. I hope you enjoy.

We're going to parent-teacher conferences this morning at 11:20 am. I'm not worried about it. Mason's big problem now seems to be a penchant for interrupting the teacher (now, where would he get personality trait like that???) As far as I know, most of the rest of the issues have worked themselves out. We'll see what the teacher says.

It's snowing. I hate to admit it, but I like it. I'm actually pretty fond of winter, which is helpful given that I live in Minnesota. With any luck, this will be a "normal" year (ie., the way I remember them) and we'll have snow cover from Thanksgiving to March. Winters drag on me when it's cold and brown. Cold and white, I don't mind so much.

Anyway, since I was wrong about Wyrdsmiths being last night, I ended up wasting my writing time yesterday getting ready for that. The good news is that I read everything and commented ahead of time for once (no homework on the bus for me.) Today will probably be a wash in the writing department as Mason is home from school all day. However, our good friend Harry is coming over later in the afternoon to play LEGOs with us. I'm psyched. We have many, many, MANY LEGOs and Mason is going to challenge Harry to build "Cloud City" from "Empire Strikes Back")

The nice thing about LEGOs is that it's a toy that the whole family enjoys. Mason loves them, Shawn loves putting together the really complex ships, and I love trying make cool looking ships without instructions. Some weekends we all just huddle on the rug next to the semi-permanent pile we keep in the living room, and just parallel paly for hours on end.

The gap is closing between Franken and Coleman here in Minnesota. It's down to 200 something. According to a newshound friend of mine, recounts tend to favor Democrats (we're sloppy voters, apparently.) I'm going to keep my fingers crossed. It'd be nice to be fillibuster proof.

Now, if only Prop 8 had been defeated in California. I'm pretty upset about the whole thing, but I've been comforting myself with the fact that Obama is likely going to have the opportunity to appoint two Supreme Court justices. In the end, those appointments will do much towards progressive measures for the whole country. My heart goes out to all my California friends (and to those in all the other 30 states who have past anti-gay rights measures over the years). We shall overcome. Yes, we can.
