lydamorehouse: (crazy eyed Renji)
Yesterday was, as previously reported, a day full of adulting. Shawn was on the phone or email all day with nearly everyone rearranging and rescheduling,, etc.

But, we got it all done.

In the middle of all this, our handyman called to remind us that he had this week on his calendar to finally replace the fence on the south side of our house. This was a fence that we got... secondhand, from Shawn's brother Greg. Greg, I should note, has literally sold us cars that turned out to be total lemons in the past, so why we accepted a USED fence from him, I'm not entirely certain. I do remember that we had a problem delineating our property when we first moved in, because the people who owned our house also owned the house next door (to the south). I suspect we were in a hurry, hoping to discourage all the wandering over from the tenants of that 5-plex into our gardens and garage. This, I remember as my first "get off my lawn" moments as a homeowner. Not my finest.  At any rate, the second the used fence was installed it began rot. So this thing has been moldering on its posts for literal decades. Replacing it is long overdue. Thus, despite the fact that we were exhausted from all the schedule futzing, we agreed that this Friday was a fine time to finally tackle the fence.

Shawn, naturally, tapped out (as we call surrendering decision making to the other partner) on this. This is perfectly reasonable for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that I am the one at home who will be doing all the coordinating with deliveries of supplies, arrivals of handypersons, and the like. But our guy, Rob, really is just a handyman. He is not super interested in being a contractor who does all the getting of supplies and organizing deliveries or even purchasing the screws, if he thinks you've got what he needs or are willing to do it for him (and save yourself his labor costs.)

We are  definitely for that last bit. This fence is irritating enough already, and so the idea of it costing more than is absolutely necessary is beyond the Pale.

This morning, I took myself over to Menards and ordered and paid for the fence panels, posts, deck screws and even the "bagster" for all the detritus.  We obviously need to get the heavy panels delivered (I do not have a truck--I know, my lesbian cred is low). So, after buying what I needed, I headed over to the delivery department.

I will say that I felt like I was watching a sitcom at the delivery desk at the Midway Menards.

It was some kind of combination of "The Office" and "Brooklyn 99." There was the overly friendly guy who really wanted to comment on the t-shirt I was wearing who CLEARLY thought that his coworkers were his Very Best Friends, though it was clear to me the jury was still out on that one as far as they were concerned. Overly Friendly Guy was the kind of guy who called his colleagues, "the boss" affectionately, but the co-worker merely rolled his eyes and said to me (as though speaking to the camera in "The Office,") "I am what they call a peon. I do all the work of the boss, but shoulder twice the blame." This being real life, I was able to respond to Peon, "Yeah, I hear you. That was always my role at all the jobs I've worked too." This earned me Peon's one and only genuine smile of the entire 25 minutes.

The comedy was that Overly Friendly Guy could not do anything without help from Peon and Hanger-On--whose name tag read "Dom," which... I understood to be short for "Dominic" but one's mind being what it is, made the whole thing funnier to me. I think, too, I might not have gone straight to the other kind of dom, had not Hanger-On/Dom's ears instantly perked up when I noted that I had a wife. He then IMMEDIATELY found a way to contrive to drop "his partner" into the conversation. We shared looks and smirks going forward.

I can't even accurately describe the whole thing because it was so surreally like wandering into a sit-com set. I am reasonably assured, however, that we eventually got my fence panels set for delivery.

I came home and ate the leftover half of a Jimmy John's sub (I had treated Shawn to lunch out yesterday since we were both so frazzled and, at that point, she still had dozens of more calls to make.)  Along with the sub, I broke into the yellow beets and made a yellow beet and apple salad from the Saint Paul Farmers Market Cookbook.

Given all the help I received ID'd this mystery plant, I thought you all might be pleased with the report that the golden beets are, indeed, golden beets and very delicious!

Fancy Tea

birthday lady at High Tea

I'm planning on writing up a Minicon con report later, but I wanted to show off the BEST birthday present I have ever given

Shawn's birthday is actually today (this is no April Fools), but several months ago, we were talking about shops that we might like to put on Grand Avenue here in St. Paul, and she floated this idea of a tea shop that served High Tea. That got me thinking, "I wonder if there is high tea being served anywhere in the metro area." I'd forgotten that right in our very own downtown Saint Paul, there is a very, very fancy historic hotel called The Saint Paul Hotel that serves a very reasonably priced high tea every Saturday.  So, I went online, discovered how far in advance a person needs to book these things (months!) and, thus, hit on the idea that it might be quite lovely to take Shawn to high tea on her birthday weekend.

Originally, I had planned this to be entirely a surprise, all I would tell Shawn that she just needed to be dressed up and ready to go somewhere on Saturday before 1 pm. This was working for awhile, but as the day approached, I realized that, while Shawn LIKES surprises, generally, I tend to forget that having to be at a place at a time makes her generally anxious. Add to it, not knowing what she's doing at that place at that time is actually A Bit Stressful. So, I told her that I would wake her up on Friday morning with a kiss and then spoil the surprise. Once Shawn found out that we were going to tea and she could look at the menu, she got very excited.

We are not fancy people? Luckily, the St. Paul Hotel doesn't actually enforce any kind of dress code, so when I discovered that I no longer fit into my black trousers, I was able to go in jeans. Shawn's knee has been very arthritic and swollen, so she opted into a longish skirt, half-nylons, and sneakers. But, we were generally feeling spiffy and cute.

There was some other (sporting?) event happening in downtown, and, of course, this was Easter weekend, so we also opted to have a valet park the car. It was only at the end when we were waiting for the valet to return with our car did it occur to me that, uh, sometimes our car won't start? There's some kind of loose wire that connects to the battery that I've been meaning to get fixed, but since I can often just open the hood and jiggle the wire, I haven't gotten around to it. But, as it happened, as I was embarrassedly explaining this to the head valet, his colleague was pulling our car around. But, that's skipping to the end, let's continue from the start.

We arrived very early, which was better for Shawn's nerves. After getting our coats checked, we were directed to wander around the downstairs area, which included a little display case showcasing some of the St. Paul Hotel's history--famous people (including Gene Autry AND HIS HORSE)--who have stayed there.  Then, we were seated in the lobby.

You will note that where we were, it was very lobby-like. It wasn't set up like a restaurant per se. Though, we had a table, people were sat in comfy chairs, couches, and the like. At first we thought, "Is this going to be comfortable?" Especially for me, with my very stubby legs, but after a while we decided that we actually had the best seats in the house. The couch looked a bit awkward, and some of the other chairs were those sort of high-off-the ground ones (the other queer couple in the room seemed to be given those.) There is also a kind of backroom that had seats that looked more like restaurant fare and we were very glad we weren't sent there. The seating was preassigned, so I have no idea what you have to do to garner the worst seats in the house.

The tables were set out with tea cups, silverware, and a menu. The menu is seasonal and it's not like you actually choose anything from it. It's just there to let you know what's coming. Food is just brought. Although, in case you are worried, you can tell the chef ahead of time if you have dietary restrictions. This is included as part of ticketing. I presume, in fact, that this is why seating is pre-arranged--so that the servers know which tables are keeping kosher or vegetarian and people will get the food that's right for them.

Our menu:

Sandwich & Savory Plate Course

Frisée, Pancetta and Whipped Herb Cheese Sandwich
Smoked Trout Salad Sandwich
Peppadew Preserve, Chevre on Toast

savory plate

Three Tier Sweets and Cheese Course

FIRST TIER
Candied Macadamia Nuts, Dried Banana Chips,
Dried Dates, Humbolt Fog

SECOND TIER
Blood Orange Blondie
Ginger Snap Cookie
Orange Truffle

THIRD TIER
Caramelized Pineapple Mousse
Black Currant Scone with Rum Butter

So, this actually came out on a tiered dessert plate....

Anyway, we had an incredibly lovely time. There is a pianist who plays music throughout the event. Tea is constantly being refilled. When we weren't chatting about life, Shawn and I just sat and stared into a HAPPY middle distance, just smiling to ourselves.

It was amazing. We immediately started planning when we might want to do this again: Mason's birthday? Mine?  Anyway, if you are local to me, I recommend giving it a try once. It's very fancy and fun and, as Shawn said at one point, "it feels like you're in a Miss Marple novel, without the murder."

Yeah, mint pesto.

I was looking around for something savory to do with the mint I'd gotten in the CSA and I kept coming across the idea of a mint and pea pesto. After finally finding a recipe that contained everything I actually had around the house at the moment, I gave it a try for lunch. I used this recipe: https://culinaryginger.com/pea-mint-pesto/.  I didn't have two cups of frozen peas, but I did have one. So, I cut the recipe in half, and ,as you can see from the picture below, that was plenty.  I didn't have leeks (I would have, but I ended up putting them in chicken stock last night because they were starting to get a little wilted,) but figured supplementing some garlic chives would be fine? AND IT WAS.

THIS WAS WEIRDLY YUMMY.

Weirdly delicious mint and pea pesto

I put the pesto over some pasta and added cubed fresh mozzarella (which turned out not to be all that fresh, so we took it right back out) and anyway, the meal itself was a surprise in that the combination of stuff really worked to make something zingy and savory.

In other far less fun news, I am taking Shawn into the doctor's today because she's been waking up with scarily dark urine. She'd had this problem before? But, we thought we'd fixed it by going off a particular drug that had this side effect. That was over a year ago and so it's disturbing that this is happening again. The only good news is that right now, the urine gets lighter as the day goes by, so hopefully it's not a sign of blood in the urine or anything like that. We'll see. Cross fingers for us.

At least she was able to get an appointment with her regular doctor.  A trip to Urgent Care is never any fun. Especially on a cold, rainy day like today.

UPDATE so that no one worries: Shawn's doctor says it's asymptomatic hematuria, which doesn't mean much since that means that, yes, there is blood in the urine, but no other symptoms. We are waiting on blood work, which should let the doctor determine where to send her next--a urologist or a kidney specialist or what. But, at least we got the, "Well, unless you have other symptoms, you're probably okay??" Thing is, Shawn is on blood thinners, so it's possible that a mild irritation in her urethra or some such is much more significant because she just doesn't stop bleeding easily. Fingers crossed, I guess?

Today, we have: garlic chives, mint, rhubarb, green onions, asparagus, and baby daikon (white radishes)
Image: Today, we have: garlic chives, mint, rhubarb, green onions, asparagus, and baby daikon (white radishes)

I ran around a LOT today. I started out knowing that I needed gas (I should have stored extra in plastic bags in the metal shed! What was I thinking?) I decided to be a multi-tasker and so I took along a bunch of stuff that Shawn and weeded out from the basement that could go to a charity shop. Then, Mason needed to go to Washington YET AGAIN. This time, he needed to go back to the garden club (it's his senior honor's project) to plant today.  I decided, ONCE AGAIN, that it would be a great idea to multi-task, so after dropping him off, I headed out to the CSA in Swede Hollow.

As you can see we're starting to actually get some more interesting stuff. It was a lot of repeat from last week, but with the very fun addition of a bundle of mint as well as a small collection of baby daikon (white radishes.) I'm very thrilled that there are more green onions/scallions, because Shawn and I had a blast making scallion pancakes, like the ones you get in Chinese restaurants as an appetizer, last Friday. I think we may have to do it again for lunch tomorrow, actually.

Today is officially "What are you reading, Wednesday?" But, everything I read is trash. In fact, I am almost embarrassed to say that just before heading off to the CSA, I finished reading Cestus: The Legend of Boxing in the Dark Ages, a manga by Shizuya Wazarai.  Which I read the volume they had on-line because I got sucked into watching an episode of the anime.

How about you? Reading anything good? Harvesting anything fun? Anybody else got rhubarb? What are you planning to do with yours?

...I totally thought this was a new vegetable. Turns out it's just a different variety of bok choy.

a much cuter version of bok choy
Image: a much WHITER, more kale like bok choy... still bok choy, though, folks.  I had no idea.

I haven't talked much about my fall CSA. First of all, I figured y'all were probably sick of me bragging about the amazing produce I was getting, and also there really hasn't been anything unusual or terribly interesting. We had a surfeit of habanero peppers, all of which I gave away to a little free pantry.  Likewise, we had too many hot Thai bird pepper, some of which I still have (though I did add one to the the Thai eggplant dish I made before and that was actually a yummy addition.) But, like, we have a bucket of them... and we just don't pepper that much.  But, otherwise it's been butternut squash and green beans and the sorts of things you'd expect in a fall share.

Then came this today. They listed it as pok choi, but that was just a fooly, because pok choi is just British for bok choy. They are the same vegetable. This one is just called white bok choi, and the one I see in the supermarket more regularly is the Shanghai bok choi.  I am excited to tell you that I can accidentally read the Chinese for this: 小白菜 because it's the same in Japanese Kanji: Small White Vegetable.  Ironically, in Japanese, the Kanji is different, as it the word: chingensai.

I have not attempted to taste it yet, but will report as to whether or not the white variety tastes significantly different from the Shanghai variety. I suspect it won't.  The trick will be convincing my wife that this is, indeed, the same vegetable she has grown to enjoy.
