Well, now that that's over, tell me how y'all have been? How's everyone else holding up??

Thanks to the "help" of the power company, I'm going to be in need of some ideas for decently sized native shrubs to replace a tree they removed from our alley property.  Technically, the tree is on our property, but, technically, they have the right-of-way for power line clearing, so Shawn talked to the guy and said, "FFS, don't let it die slowly, just take it out, if you're doing your usual butchering job." (Only a little more diplomatically.) So, I guess we get free tree removal as part of the deal?

I put in an email request to get on the docket as soon as Rainbow Tree Care is up and running again. They regularly trim our trees for us, so I'm just going to have them remove the stump and give us a consult on native planting we might be able to do back there.

To be perfectly honest, it's always been a bit of a junk tree haven, so we might as well get purposeful since our hand has been played for us, as it were.

Is it just me, or is this Tuesday a little cursed?

A friend of mine in Canada tried to on-line order some stamps and discovered Canada Post's website was down for ordering. She then tried to get e-books from the library and discovered THAT website was also down.

Can we all check-in? IS YOUR TUESDAY OKAY?

First of all, I would like to welcome sourdough starter, Vera, to our family...

a bubbly, sour-smelling gift from the goddess
Image: a bubbly, sour-smelling gift from the goddess....

I am here to tell you that Naomi is absolutely correct about the abundance of wild yeast in Minneapolis/St. Paul. This stuff was actively bubbling within three days.

You may be wondering about the name.  Interestingly several of the cookbooks that I consulted for a recipe to start the starter suggested that it was traditional to name your starter once it begins to show signs of life.  First of all, it is, in fact alive... and needs to be fed, daily, on a schedule. Secondly, apparently the yeast that you have captured is UNIQUE to you and your household. So, this really is, in many ways, your baby. Though, Shawn and I have decided to think of our yeast not quite so much like a baby (though I did make a birth announcement on Facebook, because I am silly,) but as an old auntie that has come to live with us, since this is such an ancient tradition. Hence the name Vera. Yes, we named it after the BBC detective, but it's also just an old-fashioned name to our ears.

I am fascinated by all the things that seem to be true. When it started to bubble it really did smell pleasantly sour. When it wants to be fed, however? STINKS. And, then the instant you feed it? Back to smelling lovely and tasty.

Ironically (?), fortuitously (?),  the day that Vera here started to bubble, our across-the-street neighbors texted us to offer up a loaf of Jonas's sourdough.  Jonas has been practicing and perfecting his sourdough for months. We have been consistently been offered his second loaf (most recipes make two). Yesterday's loaf? AMAZING. He's really hit is stride. I may be texting him for tips and tricks once my starters is ready to bake with.

We have been trading in baked goods (and other pandemic needs, like a can of tomato paste and some pry bars for a home improvement project they started.) Since both of us have "air-lock" porches, we can do no-contact drop-offs very easily. I've never been happier that I am an extrovert and made fast-friends with them the moment they moved in. Jonas is a university professor of economics, a recent immigrant from Sweden, and Cherylynn has a PhD is some science, and is working with the Department of Health, I believe. Midway is the kind of neighborhood that appeals to professors (we have a Hamline anthropology professor and her artist husband to the north of us) because we are convenient to a lot of the local universities and we are cheap as hell because the houses are modest and tend to sell to working class folks and we have a number of rent-controlled apartments/duplexes, too.

In fact, I took a few pictures of some of the houses near us yesterday for Facebook. We didn't go very far from home because Shawn was feeling headachey. She got her first cluster headache of the stay-at-home order, alas. Interesting that it's been the longest in-between stretch. I think, even though there's stressful stuff at work, there's something about being home that has reduced some trigger or other.

Lastly, I thought I would show off the progress I have made on my anxiety quilt.

It is now large enough to hide under:

I added another line of squares and rectangles last night and when I pointed out to my family how AMAZINGLY crooked I'd stitched it, Mason just smiled and said, "Lyda Morehouse: putting the crazy back in crazy quilt."

I feel this perfectly encapsulates my crafting style.  It is now my new motto.

So, that's me, in a nutshell. How are things where you are? Everyone staying well/well enough? Getting enough sleep?

cats in an open window
Image: shadowy cats in a bright, open window.

All my co-workers do all day is stare out the window.

In fact, I had the window next to me in the sun room open a few minutes ago, so that Willow could sniff at the birds at the feeder. I can tell you, that wind is cold today.  The sun is peaking through the clouds, but, if we go for our walk, I'm going to pull on my parka and be sure to wear a hat.  I do hope we get out. This evening and tomorrow is predicted to be rain and a "wintry mix," which no one likes in April.

Shawn just had her video appointment with the urologist. The newest theory is that she passed a kidney stone, but he does want her to come in for our favorite... (wait for it!).... More Scans!  I have been teasing Shawn that she should apply to the screen actors' guild, because she's been on FILM so much over the past few years.  They are going to call us with the appointment for that. Whee. Though I will say? I'm glad that Shawn is being seen? It feels like a weird kind of stability, having a non-pandemic related medical issue being dealt with.

Shawn's birthday was a lovely day, actually. She asked me if, this year, it would be okay to just go down her Amazon wish list and buy a bunch of stuff off of it. Of course, I said okay. I mean, probably I should have already had things bought for her months ago? But, who am I kidding? Before the pandemic, I was planning on doing my usual scramble a few days before her birthday.

I had to laugh when everything arrived, however.  You know, if it had been my list, the real question would have been: do we have enough money for EVERYTHING I want??  Meanwhile, the stuff that arrives for Shawn include: a set of new sewing needles, two stencils for her bullet journal, some very nice colored pens with fine tips, and some bath gel.  When she finally opened everything, I said to her, "Wow, you really pushed out the boat, huh?" Apparently, she just has simple taste. It's probably good that one of us does.

I could have made her a layer cake, but she really, really wanted a blueberry pie. We made a pie together. Shawn always makes the filling and I'm in charge of the crust. It turned out amazing. In fact, in a few minutes, I'm going to help myself to a bit of pie for second breakfast.  For the steam holes, I carved out 'Happy Birthday' which you can mostly read. I should post a picture of that for you all to see...

Then, we went for our usual walk and I took a ton of pictures of the cool houses in the Summit neighborhood. We plan to keep doing this As Long As This Goes On, so our plans include eventually exploring Swede Hollow and the area on the other side of the High Bridge, etc.  My goal is to make everyone on my Facebook feed as in love with Saint Paul as I am.  Since Shawn just informed me she might have to work through our usual lunch, I may drive to a spot where I know there's some more chainsaw art, because I have a friend living in Zanzibar who is FASCINATED by this very Midwestern art form.

I worked a bit on my quilt, too. This one is taking a bit longer because the sewing is slightly more complicated (for me, at any rate.) I will have to post my progress at some point.

Speaking of quilting, I've been seeing people reacting to this idea that there's a weird amount of "pandemic pressure" to develop or deep-dive on some new or preexisting hobby. That we're all supposed to somehow be spending our so-called extra free time bettering ourselves. I do not proscribe to this. I am ONLY quilting because I am full of anxiety and quilting currently helps with that because I have to focus on it. Likewise, I've been keeping up with my Japanese, for the routine. That's it. I don't want anyone reading this thinking that just because I'm posting all these things that seem like "self-improvement" that I expect that of anyone. We are all dealing in our own way. I'm perfectly aware, too, that some people are still just as busy with work as they always have been and some people are even still having to go to work. And, that other people just can't even because getting through their day is enough work.

I do need to figure out how to get back to fiction writing, though. For my sanity. But, I am allowing myself an extended grace period as we all figure out this new reality.

Anyway, that's me. I think I'll hop in the car and go take some photos of chainsaw art.

How are the rest of you holding up?

Big orange floof sleeping on his head

People on Facebook keep telling me that *IS* his job, but I still think he's slacking. He should be sleeping on me, if nothing else.

How's everybody today?

We're doing pretty good. Shawn just spent a good portion of the morning setting up a "standing desk" in her living room office, because her back has really started acting up now that she's had to leave all her ergonomic furniture at the office. Before anyone suggests it, she does have a lot of back exercises she can do (and has been doing) from all the PT sessions she's had over the years. Shawn is actually pretty good at keeping up with those at home, honestly.  Better than I would be, I think.

Mason is still conked out, though I think I just heard his voice. Ironically, his spring break starts today for Saint Paul Public Schools. The college might be back "on" though.  At least one of his classes was already set up for electronic learning, but the other was an art class. I have no idea what he's going to be doing for that now. Shawn found us a project to DYI a cat tent, and, if we get too stir crazy, we may try it. I don't feel I need to keep him entertained. He's sixteen, after all, but he was complaining the other day of feeling like a lot of his hobbies are passive, rather than creative. Which I get. Mine are pretty passive, too, though I end up with a novel at the end....

Our weekend was pretty good. I had a lovely (and much needed) gaming session with my regular Star Trek folks. The GM and I had conspired to do something rather surprising with my character, and hopefully that didn't shock the other players too much. (It was fun, he went rogue.)  Then, I spent much of Sunday writing up a final scene for everyone, which was way too much fun.

We had a few actual PHONE calls, too.  (What was old is new again.) I talked to my folks--after a failed attempt a Zoom, which normally works nine times out of ten for me, and my friend Sean M. Murphy.

The weather was the only thing that didn't cooperate. Saturday night, during the game, Minneapolis/St. Paul was having a fairly intense thunder storm. The GM reported hail over in his side of the Twin Cities.  It was just dreary and miserable most of Sunday, too. Not great for getting exercise. Today, at least there will be more sun. Shawn and I are already planning on where we'll go for our daily walk.

My stomach just growled. I should make myself a late breakfast. I got up this morning and started baking bread. We are out and Mason put in a request for the herb bread I made before, because it made half-way decent sandwich bread. I'll go toast myself a bagel and get the herb filling ready for that.

Stay well everybody!
