So, of course, I checked out the Captain America site this morning, and I have to say I could do without this: Captain America Lands Titanic Rumor from Wired's blog (which they apparently cribbed from ComicBookMovies.com). Leo DiCaprio as Steve Rogers? I believe the comic book term is: AAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhh!

I'm very sorry, but my humble opinion is that Mr. DiCaprio looks a bit like a rat. I find him unattractive and sort of vaguely sleezy. And he's not nearly tall enough, is he? (Cap is always pictured as nearly six inches or more taller than Spider-Man. Is DiCaprio any taller than Toby McGuigure?) Sadly, I think I'd have preferred Matthew McConnaughy -- and I wasn't terribly sold on that idea.

Although, you know, I thought the Marvel producers/casting folks were off their meds when they picked Robert Downey, Jr. as Iron Man, too. So what do I know?

Also, as far as which Avengers they're planning to do for the movie, apparently this is the answer: the semi-original line-up, as spilled by the director of Iron Man in Newsweek -- Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, and Ant-Man. (Technically, for you purists out there, the originals were: Ant-Man, Wasp, Thor, Iron Man, and the Hulk... Cap joined four issues later, having been frozen in suspended animation in arctic ice.)

I don't know... Leo looked pretty tough in Departed and he does have a certain 1940s feel to him. Personally, I like Paul Walker. He's talented, he looks the part. I think he could do it, but Leo would bring them the money to really support the film, so...

I read this thing where they broke down investment versus return and it claimed that so far, for every dollar the studio has given Matt Damon, he has returned 30. So, who knows, maybe hey would go for Damon.

I don't think Pitt as Thor is even remotely true. I doubt they're forgetting Wasp, I think they're just going to include her in Ant-Man. Female superhero movies have just tanked and they're all cold feet-y about making more. If wonder woman with Joss Whedon is denied, there's no way they're doing the Wasp (especially with the obvious joke that would be beat into the ground) Speaking of which... do you think they'll mention that at all in the Ant-Man movie?

"Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, and Ant-Man"...

Wow. Not even a token chick? Poor Wasp.

That was the first thing I noticed as well. They couldn't find even -one- female superheroine lead?

Okay, so you have one small guy, Ant-Man. Maybe you don't want to duplicate with the Wasp.

Maybe you're saving Hawkeye, Quicksilver, and Scarlet Witch for another Avengers movie down the road.

She-Hulk would be duplicating the Hulk, and bring in too much awkward backstory for the first movie.

Black Widow, there'd be a great choice. Exotic, hot, capable, intelligent, and she wouldn't really be duplicating anyone... and she's just as much a classic Avenger as anyone else.

I dunno, I'm all for a classic line-up, but without even one superheroine in the mix, it's just silly.

I would go with Widow, personally... but even if it was an Ant-Man/Wasp choice, why not pick Wasp?

And, I definitely agree about superheroines and movies. I had hopes for Wonder Woman until Joss Whedon backed out of doing the script.

I totally agree with you about DiCaprio. I have not been much of a fan and I think his last good acting was in Gilbert Grape. I will say I did not see The Aviator. but I did see Blood Diamond and felt a better actor could have made the part a meatier role.

I am worried that Marvel may start making mistakes if they are just looking for Big Names.

No no no no no thats just wrong. although I find him much more physically attractive than DiCaprio and he is fit he just doesn't have quite the needed triangular physique. Thor need that shoulders at least five foot wide and waist about 2 inches.

Whoever they cast (and I admit, I can't see di Caprio in the role), it would be hard-put not to be an improvement on the last film version of Captain America. (Though I did like the scene where Cap is revived, and realises that he's in a VW with a Japanese radio and assumes that the Axis won the war.)
