lydamorehouse: use for RPG (elf)

Avelynnea didn't end up coming out as an adult at last night's session as we were mostly busy killing more owlbears, but perhaps there will be a moment in the next session when we confront the mushroom queen/forest hag.

The GM let slip that we're going to probably be leveling up again soon, so that means I ALSO get to level up all my other characters in the tree (which includes my barbarian, who will be taking a level in wizard, I think. I've been imagining that he might not use a spell book, but have his spells tattooed on his forearms because: barbarian first and foremost.) I've also entertaining giving Avelynnea a level in ranger or rogue.

In a Petrified Mushroom Village
Somewhere in the Derlow Forest
Ceyan Empire

Dear Idyril and Sierra:

Since I’m trying to take more responsibility for the greater world and my part in it, I may have done something a little bit foolish that cost me nineteen minutes of my life.

Nineteen minutes doesn’t seem like much right now, but it may be quite precious later.

Let me see if I can Idyril-style the sequence of events. So, did I ever mention what we’re doing out in the Derlow Forest? I know I said I didn’t want to go off and do any of it, but did I mention that The Party had been hired by a Messy Magic Witch professor from the university at Kavari to “find out what’s going on” and check out the reports of calcified mushroom villages? No? Well, that’s what we were hired to do..

I have to say? If you are ever in the position to sign a contract with the university for a job, maybe ask for better perimeters for your mission? I sort of felt like we were done with this whole thing when Hana and Raymal ended up talking in Druidic to the weird little mushroom people whom they discovered pouring minerals into the well water of the first village we stumbled across. This information clearly fulfills “what’s going on?” Little mushroom people are using minerals to calcify mushroom houses for some reason. That’s one hundred percent what’s going on.

Done. Time to go back to the city, get paid, relax at the Foolish Bachelor until Brightwright’s money runs out, eat scones, and sleep on a feather bed.

For some unknown reason, The Party thinks this is a problem that we are required to fix. I’m not entirely convinced it’s a problem at all. Maybe the mushroom people have a perfectly valid reason for wanting their mushroom houses to be stone and not rot-eating animal-plants. I mean, I can think of several reasons why stone might be preferable to living inside an animal’s carved flesh. Not the least of which is that they won’t decay or disappear once they finish their fruiting cycle and/or consuming whatever is sustaining them underground currently. (Honestly, Idyril, this is the question I’m far more interested in: what are these mushrooms eating that makes them grow big enough to be carved into people-sized houses and buildings? Is this whole place some kind of giants’ burial ground?)

But, I guess our current quest is to stop these mushroom folks from poisoning the wells, as it were.

That takes me to my missing time. As part of figuring out who commands these mushroom people, we ended up rescuing a newly awakened Elm who then took us to this mushroom island. On the island, there was a satyr who was clearly from the Other Side and left in charge of opening a portal to the faerie realm. The satyr mentioned that his mistress was a hag who was bitter after a break-up with a scoundrel whose name I recognized from your letters, Valaram, the Prince of Rhyme and Frost.

Since this seemed to be part of your whole invasion plot, I thought to myself, “Avelynnea, you need to go through that portal and just make sure it doesn’t lead directly to some Fey army encampment.” So, I did. The satyr wanted to sleep with me. But I convinced him that I could give him a kiss that he’d remember his whole life, in exchange for a minute through the portal. The Other Side was nothing special, it turned out. There was a wooden bridge to the mirror-Fey-version of the island and a few other minor changes, but no army.

Look at me. Adulting.

So, now you can report that back to hottie Captain Philip if you like.

I’m kind of surprised to discover Valaram’s influence this far afield? But, since the local hag is an ex, I have to wonder if the Queen Below tried it over here in this Empire, decided it wasn’t what she wanted, and turned towards the greener pastures of the Kingdom of Shira.

So a bust, really, and it cost me nineteen minutes that I’ll never get back. I suppose, given the nature of fairy portals, I should be grateful that it wasn’t nineteen years that I lost.

We ended up in this main village following up on the island mushroom people’s suggestion that Mother (theirs, not ours) is the one giving orders and she resides here. I have a bad feeling that The Mother isn’t going to be some kind of kombucha spore queen, but the hag that the satyr mentioned. We ended up tangling with a magic-user we suspecte was her a bit when we first arrived here.

Also, more owlbears are dead.

Hana says they’ll kill us if we don’t kill them and one of them was definitely some kind of weird, tampered with hybrid, since it seemed to include some shark-toughened skin, but… I don’t know. I’m not cut out for this, as I’ve said. I was glad that I ended up helping Thyme track down the hag rather than throw arrows at the owlbears.

Yours,
Avelynnea
