Sunday is for Cooking
May. 6th, 2018 03:45 pmWe always say we're going to clean the house on Sunday, but inevitably we end up cooking a ton of food. Shawn woke up this morning and wanted kuchen (edits because Shawn read this and said, no, change the link to reflect North Dakota German's from Russia kuchen.) Mason wanted to make an apple pie for his girlfriend, so we all made that together.

Then, just as I finished the dishes from all of those, Mason announced he wanted Scotch Eggs for breakfast... so we went to the meat market and I made those as well.
Tonight, we're going to grill out.
I kept saying to my family, "Good thing I'm trying to cut down on my cholesterol! Hand me another Scotch Egg!" Yep. Ah, well. My only comfort is that I spent a large part of the afternoon raking up a [bleep]-ton of leaves that somehow we always have in our yard in the spring (and literally no one else ever seems to. Maybe we're the yard that everyone's blown leaves end up in.)
Yesterday, when we ALSO had plans to clean the house, we ended up estate and rummage sale-ing. That was a lot of fun. Shawn and I used to spend a lot of weekend mornings estate sale-ing. We spent all of $26.00 and came home with some plates, a few odds and ends, more fabric for her rugs, and an exercise bike. :-)
The coolest venue we stopped at was St. Clement's Church.

The rummage sale was in the basement, but they had their sanctuary open to the public:

The church building is on the national historic registry. It was really very lovely. An okay sale, though my latest goal at these things is to see if anyone is giving away decent stationary. It's not really the sort of thing you find very often, so that makes it especially fun to try to hunt for. I did find a few cards at the church that weren't too religious, so that's a bit of a find.
How was your weekend?

Date: 2018-05-07 11:08 pm (UTC)Did you know that it's good to keep leaves in your yard over the winter? Lots of bugs live there, and as we all know, bugs are good for the ecosystem.
(Sadly, I don't recall the details, but there was a local media report on this a couple of years ago. Now, Mr S [my friend's spouse] no longer blows all the leaves out of the non-grassy areas in the yard.)
There were three book sales this weekend, and I made it to two of them -- at the end, during the bag sales. It's a big source of inventory for our local, lefty, books-to-prisoners programs. (I'm not usually up early enough for garage sales, so it works out.)

Date: 2018-05-08 12:53 am (UTC)I leave leaves on my hillside and in several gardens, but if I leave big patches on the lawn I end up killing the grass? I might be doing it wrong, which wouldn't surprise me. I love gardens, but hate gardening. The same goes for lawn maintenance. I love lawns, but hate the work (and chemicals!) that goes into making them lush. Organics for the win (except, like I say, I usually end up with dead lawn patches, but whatever. I'm happy to let creeping charlie fill in.)
Cool about the book sales. We LOVE book hunting. I'm so glad we have a little free library for our overflow nowadays.

Date: 2018-05-08 04:39 am (UTC)Also, the weather was gorgeous so all the Mother's Day shoppers were at Saturday Market. A surprising number of them wanted dinner plates. I think I sold 12, all told.
