Attack on Titan (Spoilers?)

revolutionaryjo, last night I finished #24 of Attack on Titan/Shingaki no Kyojin. When I mentioned in passing that I was watching this finally, a reader of my Bleach fanfic said that s/he couldn't decide whether or not to look forward to or dread the day I started writing SnK fanfic.
I'm never going to write in this universe.
Though it has a military structure that totally appeals to me (because unlike Bleach, the various units actually function a lot more like real military divisions,) the universe the characters exist in is unrelentingly grim. The situation itself is no more horrible than a lot of shonen stories. The future is a place where humanity has been forced to retreat behind walls becausekaiju giant human-shaped creatures (Titans) roam around looking for tasty people to eat. A hero emerges.... you know how this part goes, I'm sure. Eren has a determination no one else has, along with a nifty superpower that makes him the hope for humanity.
There's even a lot of intriguing politics. There are spies and traitors in our ranks. It's unclear whether or not the whole thing is a farce, ie a giant set-up by the powers that be to keep humanity cowering and afraid and completely malleable and heavily taxed.
Normally, this would be a winning combination for me. But, the author is really extremely 'realistic' in his approach to war and casualties... heavy on the casual part of that, which is to say, like in a real war, people die stupid, meaningless deaths, sometimes very much random and unfair. Very, very few people get to be heroes. Even the hero of the story, Eren, doesn't always get to be heroic. Sometimes his superpower goes out of control, and sometimes he can't call it up, and sometimes he's ASKED to waste human lives for a greater goal (which also sometimes doesn't work out, even if the effort is valiant.)
That last bit is the part that has caused an utter lack of "FEELS." I care about what happens in this story, but the situation has forced me to divest in everyone. I have one character I like, but the words "DOOMED" seem so clearly printed on his face, that I refuse to imagine anything beyond THIS MOMENT.
SnK should also be a prime candidate for fic from me, because they skip over a lot of the more interesting times--boot camp is given two or three episodes before we get a timeskip and then training with the advance scout troop also gets only a few episodes. This is where the FEELS fail. Possibly more attention is given these times in the manga, because the speed at which we head into action means that I miss out on the little moments that could make these characters stand out. It shrinks the world rather than expand it for me. If we had several episodes of life at boot camp, I might give a few more 3-D maneuvering f*cks.
Yet I'm expected to keep track of all these white people. The other problem about SnK is that no one really stands out physically. Several people (being military and all) have the same hair color and hair style and there's not a single person of color. Which, I presume can be blamed on the fact that this takes place in some kind of pseudo-Germany/Europe, but last time I checked the Moors had made an in-road into Europe SOME TIME AGO. It's kind of creepy, in fact, that it is CANON that Mikasa is Asian and THUS IS CONSIDERED VERY RARE. I have no idea if that's meant to strike the kind of fear it does into my heart, but, if we have more Gunthers and Heinricks I'm going to start thinking that they're intentionally echoing Nazis.
The uniform certainly does.
So, perhaps if I read the manga I'll start sympathizing with the mindless Titans?
It will be interesting to see whyAnnie is one of them. Her motivations are currently unclear and it's fascinating to me that the times that she powers-up/rips free/calls others to eat her while in her Titan form is whenever someone threatens to cut off her limbs. Had she been experimented on? Is Eren's creepy-ass scientist dad somehow to blame with his Silence of the Lambs basement? My theory about why all the Titans are attracted to Eren and why they're always trying to capture him? Dad is the villain. He's created all the variants, including all the ones who are ultra-intelligent and he's done it at the behest of the government.
But, even with all this, I have very little interest in investing in this fandom beyond being a reader/watcher. if I had any FEELS it would have been focused on Jean/Marco AND ONE OF THEM IS ALREADY DEAD. It's kind of hard to write a sweeping romance with a F*CKING GHOST (although SnK fan writers/artist are sure doing their damnedest.)

Date: 2013-09-25 09:01 pm (UTC)So YMMV, of course, but one of the reasons I like SnK so much is because it's atypical. The hero isn't the one most special and talented guy with the super power. Eren has a lot of passion, but he makes bad decisions. I also appreciate that he's not the immediate master of fighting as a titan. There are people out there who have been doing it a lot longer and better.
I like that the world is grim and realistic, which I hardly ever seen in a shonen action series. Nothing's glamorized and when it is, the facade is ripped away, usually rather painfully. People have to make incredibly difficult decisions. Characters are morally complex. There's no master villain at the heart of it all to defeat. It's a survival show when it comes down to it. It's humanity battling its own demons, both in the form of titans (which I strongly suspect are a creation of humanity) and internally (throwing away your humanity for a greater cause has become a theme).
I guess I’ve just seen a LOT of anime and after a while I got tired of the glut of ones that felt too predictable and/or too similar. When something breaks the mold I sit up and take notice.
I can't say it's the case for everyone, but for me, I think my emotional investment in Titan had a lot to do with being unspoiled for episode 5 and having to wait week to week for new episodes past episode 9 or so. I'm a sucker for narratives that subvert expectations and surprise me, so when they "killed off" Eren and it looked like it was going to be the Mikasa show going forward, I got really excited. Then I got emotionally attached to Mikasa when we learned about her backstory. She's got much more of the hero's arc than Eren, but the show still frames him as the main character. Like I've mentioned before, I think I'd be ten times a fan of the show than I am now if they had actually done that, but oh well. It had its hooks solidly in me by the time Eren came back.
That said, if Mikasa ever dies I will fail out of the show so fast. That's a dealbreaker right there. (And so help me if anyone spoils me one way or the other about this, I will hunt them down. /serious face)
I hear you in as much as I don’t want to read a lot of fic for it either. The ships I ship are only peripheral at best. Nice to think about, but not in a NEEEEEED TO REAAAAAAAD NOWWW way. I am curious about Levi, Hanji, and Erwin's backgrounds, but I feel like the show might deliver on that front eventually and in the meantime I'm just enjoying people's casual theories about them. I do kind of want all the happy fluffy AUs though. Shit. Where are the happy fluffy AUs? Coffee shops! Bakeries! Police departments! AUs where everybody lives! I didn't realize I wanted them until just now. D: D: D:
To your point, I deeply suspect Eren’s dad is a douchebag at least partially responsible for this mess humanity’s in too. I think Annie may have actually been trying to protect Eren by kidnapping him and taking him somewhere away from the military. Somewhere he would have found out about the real story of what’s going on with people who turn into titans and all that. I don’t know anything for certain though. It’s just a guess.
Just a heads up, the manga is almost frame for frame the same as the anime, so it may not do much more for you than the anime has. Sometimes things happen a bit out of order, but they happen all the same. There's only one scene in 7 volumes of manga so far that I found that hadn't actually happened in the anime (yet).

I just wish I liked it better, but it's probably a matter of taste (and possibly of age), but, mostly, I think, the biggest issue with my not being able to muster up any feels has to do with something you hit on in your response... spoilers. I was spoiled from day one about the unusual nature of this show (ie you can't depend on anyone to live.) So, I right-away turned off my usual investment goggles in self-defense.
It's super hard for me to care, because I was told I'd cry. And, ultimately, I don't want to cry my way through shonen anime, and there's the rub....
I actually thought Eren might be dead after #5, too. I went to Wikipedia to check, in fact, because I wasn't sure if I could handle a shonen story without its typical shonen hero--particularly that soon. If Eren were to die now? I might be able to go on, because, as you say: Mikasa. Plus, there's Levi now, too, and Jean and any number of other people who help carry the show emotionally, but at the time he was still very much the only voice of hope.
It's the hope I need, though.
But what does Mikasa say? The world is a cruel place.

At 46, I got that message loud and clear, thank you. Enough already, in fact. I'm much more surprised when stuff goes well, when people DON'T die the horrible, meaningless deaths life usually doles out.
Plus, I haven't watched nearly as much Anime as you, so I'm not tired of it yet. I still thrill to the rousing speeches and cheer the ridiculous power-ups in the nick of time. In fact, I've very much embraced the trope of the shonen hero. I find it really COMFORTS me to know that, when the shit hits the fan, my shonen hero/heroine will power up and SAVE THE DAY.
That being said, moral complexity is one of the things that drew me into Bleach, even though I suppose the complexity there isn't very obvious. But it's one of those things that the more you think about how the Soul Society is set up, you more you start to wonder if maybe the Quincies (or Aizen or whatever big bad) should destroy it and start over. But, it takes some thinking beyond a surface level to go there and you can enjoy Bleach for the big-ass sword fights and leave it at that.
Right now, the moral complexity is what's keeping me tuning in to SnK(and will keep me tuning in.) I want to know why anyone would side with the Titans and I want to know who else is one of the intelligent Titans... I have my theories, of course, but I have no sense of how it fits into the full story. And I'm totally, 100% invested in the story, which I truly think is brilliant and worth all the hype.
You really think Eren's made poor choices? I think he's made choices he regrets, but who knows how many lives would have been lost if he'd transformed earlier in the big-ass tree forest. I'm with Levi on this one. It's easy to imagine you know the right answer, but reality and fate are fucked up things. Who's to say if he'd transformed during his first impulse, that he wouldn't have lost his way? What if, not being sufficiently focused on killing (and eating!) the female Titan, he might have killed Squad Levi HIMSELF? The Female Titan might have been forced to kill Eren and then Levi Squad could still have all died trying to avenge him or whatever. There really is no telling, and, as you say, that's the absolute wonder of this show.
Armin, right now, is the only one who is kind of a trope onto himself. He has all the insights and they're always right. He need to have one that goes horribly wrong, too. (Not that I really want that, I'm just saying.)
So, yeah, I think we agree. It's just that SnK makes me sad and doesn't thrill me the way seeing Ichigo power up at the last moment does. I want my cliché for its comfort and joy. I like my big-ass swords; you like your big-ass trees. It's all good, because I like the big-ass trees too... I'm just not going to invest because I can't take the heartache.

There are many days I just want a fluffy happy fandom, but I get that fix from other fandoms. And goodness knows there are plenty of tropes I will watch and enjoy 8 bajillionty times over.

That's why he got eaten in the 5th episode. That's why he went back to fight the female titan. And it's usually not a big deal to me because he's what? 16? No one makes super informed choices at that age. And usually he has some presence of mind to either follow Mikasa's lead or let Armin do the thinking before jumping into anything. I like that he's fallible and there's no choice that's clearly the right choice. But going back to fight the female titan really angered me. So many people in the Survey Corps died trying to protect him. The whole point was to protect him. When he went back he negated the purposefulness of their deaths and also put both Mikasa and Levi in danger. But at least he does have the capacity to learn because he did certainly regret it after the fact. I certainly don't hate the guy, but I do sometimes yell "WHAT ARE YOU DOING, EREN?" at my screen for the duration of an episode. Like when he punches his fists off. Oh, Eren.
Anyway! tl;dr, we can all like or not like different things for different reasons and that's just fine. I do enjoy me some big ass trees. :)

Не определяется винчестер системой
Date: 2013-10-08 12:41 pm (UTC)В общем ситуация: Второй винчестер WD на 160 Gb, Bios его видит, а Win XP нет, хотя че-то там говорит , типа найдено новое устройство и оно готово к работе, но в "Мой компьютер" захожу, а его нема ...Все возможные вырианты клем повыставлял - безтолку, даже на отдельный шлейф сажал.....
Чего делать даже и не знаю.....
Кто знает помогите плиз.....!!!!!!!
И еще один вопросец в догонку: на винчестере (уже совсем другом) сбоку отверстие, которое было прикрыто какой-то наклейкой (заводской).......ну и в силу обстоятельств наклейка была содрана...На место этой наклейки был приклеен скотч....
Вопросы: Че за отверстие?Принципиально ли, чтобы оно было закрыто или наклейку надо убирать?Скотч выдержит температурный режим винчестера?И до каких температур может нагреваться винчестер?
