.. for all you pagans out there: does anyone know a good source (on-line or at the library) for Czech, Bohemian, and/or Polish goddesses?

As someone who's married to a Pole, I'm not certain there are any Polish godesses, apart from the Virgin Mary. But I'll ask.

How old do you want? You may need to go back. You could look into godesses of Travelers or Gypsy's. I'll see what I can find you......

Two books come to mind right away:

The New Book of Goddesses and Heroines by Patricia Monaghan, Llewellyn, 1998

The Witches' Goddesses by Janet and Steward Farrar, Phoenix Publishing, 1987.

And of course, Witchvox.

If you can give me move of idea of what you need, I might be able to help. Do you need the name of a Czech love goddess, or something more elaborate.

Also, I think those are relativly recent countries, i.e. after the invasion of Christianity. Do you want Baltic region or Slavic region? Or eastern Germanic?

You could poke around some of the online links at knowledge rush.

I don't know how much I trust the entries, but it's a quick and dirty start.

Wilson Library used to have a great older multi-volume set of world religions that was good for Eastern European deities. Of course that was 15+ years ago and I've forgotten the title.

I am not a pagan, but I do have research skills and internet access...

http://www.pantheon.org/ might be a useful place to poke around. I don't know about the quality of their entries in this area, but from what I've seen of the mythologies I'm more familiar with, it's generally pretty good.

The complete dictionary of European gods and goddesses (http://www.worldcat.org/oclc/60805239&referer=brief_results) looks like it might be useful (most larger libraries have some more general mythology dictionaries in their reference collections if you can't get hold of this one-- I recommend a trip to your local university library if you weren't already planning on it)

Pagan gods of the Slavs (http://www.worldcat.org/oclc/44042508&referer=brief_results) looks promising based on the subject headings and title, assuming you're interested in Slavic deities.

I can't vouch for either of these books personally, but they might be worth looking for (interlibrary loan is your friend).

Possibly useful subject headings:
Slavs-- Religion
Gods, Slavic

I'm happy to poke around some more if you haven't got enough yet... The answers to [livejournal.com profile] magentamn's questions about what regions you're interested in would be helpful in that case.
