my crazy quilt
Image: a rather dark picture of a quilt I started over a year ago.

Facebook has this thing where it reminds you of things you posted about x many years ago. Today, the thing that popped up for me was this quilt I started during the early days of the pandemic. I am, as it happens, still working on this. In fact, I just got a big influx of fabrics, and so I was adding to it just last night. I think this quilt is one of those lifetime projects. I will probably keep adding pieces to it forever.

I have a quilt that's all finished in terms of piecing, and is just waiting for me to drag the quilting hoop down from upstairs and get going on the finishing touches. That's a big blue and green quilt that I made for [personal profile] rachelmanija . I have another one that's actually all together and ready to go out the door. I just need to package it up and send it off.  I have just not had the energy for these for whatever reason. Currently, I am blaming the weather. It's been cold and gray and miserable here.

Though, I see sun right now. My computer tells me that it's 37 F / 3 C. I guess that's warmer than it has been??

Speaking of the outside, I'm going to have to watch a webinar about planting my pollinator garden at some point. I managed to miss the meeting somehow, but they send out recordings to everyone. To be honest, I just haven't thought about it because I try not to do too much to my lawn in early spring. I did rake the section of land that I'm going to start planting on, so I could probably start considering my options there.
I don't know. I am feeling like I should be more clever than I am feeling right now because I just popped back over to Facebook for this picture and got distracted by all the people who are whining about the demise of Twitter and talking about other social media platforms to join. Which... I mean, this comes up periodically and people pretend they're going to leave on principle, but no one ever does. But the thing that really distracted me was that at least two writer friends had threads about this and I was curious enough to see what people were suggesting, and then, lo and behold, people started mentioning Dreamwidth... only to bash it for being empty and "dead." And, I'm like, "Huh." I mean, I guess if you're comparing it to Twitter, yes. But, dead seems a little harsh.

I started to defend out little plot of awesome over here, but then decided I like it quiet. I mean, in this particular case, it really is apples to oranges. What you would get from Twitter, you will NOT get from the long, meandering form of Dreamwidth.

Anyway, here is the same quilt, a year later, also with cat.

Today has not started out terribly well. I'm currently awaiting a plumber. We woke up this morning ridiculously early as Shawn is off to Seattle for a conference. About an hour into her morning getting-ready routine Shawn came and sat on the bed with a look of deep concern. She said, "Bad news. Really, really bad news. We have a leak."

Of course my immediate thought was, "Oh my god, the fish tanks!"

So, strangely, I was relieved to discover that it was only the kitchen ceiling.

Oh, wait. The kitchen ceiling?? That's not good. But, we have a remodeling/handyman service that we love, called Platnium Remodeling. They did our downstairs bathroom (which I still haven't finished repainting), but we couldn't have been more pleased with their work. So I called them. They had to foist us off to their sub-contractor plumber guy, but at least someone is coming TODAY.

I spent the morning moving furnature out of the kitchen, because it seems pretty obvious from the advancing water stains that they're going to have to take down much of the ceiling to replace the pipes.

Yippee.

Although, really, it could be worse, as we like to say in Minnesota. We do have another working toliet (thanks to Platnium's previous work) and, with Shawn out of town, the stress-to-zen ratio will be in favor of the zen. I haven't, so far, gotten a lot of work done on the novel today, but, again, with Shawn out-of-town I will have potentially more time tonight - depending on how cooperative Mason is at bed time. Still, I don't always sleep well when she's out of town and I may take advantage of that for writing.

In other, completely unrelated news, I may join Twitter after all. The compelling reason to came from a reader of Tate's who posted on her/my blog yesterday. The reader knew, for instance, the pub date for my young-adult novel, because she gets Anne Soward's twitter feed. *I* didn't even know that. (If you're curious Penguin is saying August 2010).

Ack.

But one thing at a time, as they say. For now, I am "floating in space awaiting a rescue." (Anyone else a fan of Daniel Keys Moran?)

If I Twittered this moment's comment would be: "headed for lunch; up for a Lammy."

Because... the anthology PERIPHERY was just short-listed for the 21st Lambda Award in the lesbian erotica catagory. My AngeLINK short story, "ishtartu" included in that, though it's not terribly sexy and I'm sure it had very little to do with the nomination. But, if any of you have the power to vote on the Lambda, please consider casting a vote for PERIPHERY if you liked it!

Also, I am not watching the Saint Paul St. Patrick's Day parade right now because a) I couldn't find a date, and b) it looks like it might rain any minute.

Anyway, I should write. I've managed to go several days now without writing thanks to the weekend and the school field trip. It's time to get back to work, alas.

I should tell folks who might be interested that our gerbils have names. The black one is "B" (for "busy like a bee") and the sandy-brown one is XOXO (pronounced "zoe-zoe"). I seriously considered John's suggestion of "food" and "supplimental" as Inky's vote, especially since if there was a fair vote (as in one for every animal in the house) "food" and "supplimental" would probably win. The cats, I think, have lost weight due to the never ending excitement that is the gerbils. There is much tail twitching and batting and jumping and whisker flicking. Both Inky and All Ball like to sit on top of the cage and loom. It's quite a sight.

Happy Saint Patrick's Day!

When I was a kid, I remember going to some university library (probably my father's) and seeing the WHO'S WHO books on the shelf. Even before I knew I wanted to be a writer, I had those fantasies I think everyone secretly has about wanting to be famous. I remember pledging that SOMEDAY (as God is my witness!) I'd get into the WHO'S WHO.

Well... guess what? Yep. Cambridge WHO'S WHO finally wrote the "please fill out the form, because you're going to be included" letter. Again, I'd worry this was a scam, except there was no "and for only 29.99/mo you can buy all seventeen million volumes" or any of that. Just a request to go fill out an on-line form (or send in their post-paid deal.)

I kind of feel like it's a dream come true.

So, if were Neil Gaiman twittering I could write: "Coffee's gone cold; Got into Who's Who."

Sorry. Did any of the rest of the locals see the article in the Star Trib about Twitter and Neil? Oy. You know I love him, but more often than not I'm DEEPLY jealous -- envious, I guess, technically.

In other breaking news, if you want to read about my alter-ego talking about promotion and what I eat for snacks, you can check out the interview on Writerly So.

I still haven't figured out if I'm going to MiniCON. I probably should, if we're in town (still need to ask Shawn about that), if only because I'm definitely not going to WisCON this year. This year's WisCON is likely to be really exciting, but, right now, we just can't afford it. This year is turning out to be very strange financially... like I'm selling and writing like mad, but the checks just aren't arriving (yet, at least.) Watch everything end up coming all one month so my taxes will eat half of it.

Oh, I almost forgot [livejournal.com profile] mythicalgirl did a nice, albeit short review of FALLEN HOST on her LJ "Voices in My Head" here. It always makes me do a little happy dance when people discover my books now, when they've been out of print for so long.

Speaking of... must... write... prequel.
