For our last night of mischief before mama comes home, Mason and I splurged. We bought THREE Star Wars novels at HalfPrice Books. Insanity!

We also stopped off at Mirriam Park Library because the #15 HIKARU NO GO that I'd requested came in. Mason checked out the Goosebumps, but was underwhelmed. We did end up checking one of them out to read together called "One Night in Horrorland!"

I also had a funny experience writing my young adult novel yesterday, which I report on over at Wyrdsmiths. For the brevity of the post, I neglected the step in there where I also called [livejournal.com profile] naomikritzer on the phone to ask her opinion, and the very funny conversation we had about it all.

Ever since then I've been thinking about what's wrong with this situation. News flash: I know very little about young adult novels or the young adult market. I can name several local authors who haven't yet broken in to the YA market who know a whole hell of a lot more about it than I do. I've read only a handful of books that would be considered teen YA and I haven't been a teenager since the Cambrian period. Why am I the one writing a young adult novel? Don't get me wrong, universe. I'm extremely grateful for this opportunity (especially since Penguin has rejected further Garnet), but...

... in the end, it really is all about who you know and being in the right place at the right time with a chipper attitude and a willing smile on your face. I always suspected that much of the success in this business came down to luck and being willing to write anything, any time for anyone.

And I hope to keep banking on it.

But, I don't know. I hope my friends will continue to be my friends through it all.

Anyway, no time to think about all that. 22 days and counting....

So what the hell happened to my weekend? You mean I spent it already? Jesus, it's like Shawn's paycheck after mortgage.

What did I do this weekend? Well, let's see, I remember baking some Christmas cookies. Yeah, we even listened to Christmas music while doing it (though that's mostly because our .mp3 player seems to have a penchant for Christmas music when we set it on random, despite the thousands of songs on its playlist. Also, 40s big band and zydeco. Go figure. And if I'm working out? The damn thing picks up all my folk music, which I love, but which tends to be super slow, when all I want is something what ROCKS.)

We went to the Sprawl of America, too. I have vague memories of the crowds and the pushing and the parking and all that. You wouldn't know there was an economic crises going on shopping at LEGO Land this weekend. It was insane. I guess we're all trying to get that holiday shopping done early this year. I really couldn't tell you. Barnes & Noble was busy too.

My holiday shopping will be complete if I can find an old Star Wars book for Mason called THE COURTSHIP OF PRINCESS LEIA. I'm going to try to talk Shawn into stopping by the Uncles tomorrow so I can browse their used section. I'm trying to get Mason interested in the Star Wars spin-off books -- of which there are about six million, some of which are written by some of my favorite authors. I noticed a gigantic hardcover Clone Wars book by Karen Traviss when I was in that aisle that looked really awesome. I totally would have snapped it up for myself if I hadn't already gone way over budget on Star Wars books.

Plus, my publisher sent me a whole slue of books by Rachel Caine, specifically her YA series "The Morganville Vampires." I have to say the one I'm reading now, which is the second one in the series (DEAD GIRLS DANCE) is really pretty engaging. Of course, I love Rachel's Weather Warden series a whole ton, so it's not a huge surprise I'd cotton to these.

Oops, it's after noon. I need to hop to my writing. Today I am Lyda, so I'm going to work on the prequel some. Tomorrow Tate will need to do a bit of revision, I think. I re-read my second chapter and I think my pacing is off. I'm introducing stuff too fast. It's verging towards "over-the-topness" and I don't want to go there.

Shawn and I watched "Return of the Jedi" for Mason (who, btw, told me this morning that he never needs to see that movie. So, JPJ, you can rest easy.) And, it's totally sparked the fanfic author in me. I've been "writing" Star Wars fanfic in my head as I fall asleep at night. Have I ever ranted about the prequel movies here? Well, I hate them with a passion, and it's partly because I feel like they could have been awesome if only I'd been allowed to write the script (and maybe re-cast Anikin, but that's just for my twisted sexual fantasies that you don't really need to know about.) This passionate love/hate lead me to read FAR too much Obi-Wan/Qui Gon Jin slash for a time, and still ocassionally consumes many of my on-the-verge of falling asleep hours.

I am SUCH a fan girl.

Mason's parent/teacher conferences went swimmingly, btw. It helps that he's academically... well, gifted, so there's not a lot of concern there. (Reading = 3rd grade). Speaking of which, the school was very smart this year as they had their Scholastic Press fundraiser book drive in the hallway where all the parents have to pass (usually with kids in tow) to get to the parent/teacher conferences. Mason walked out with three books, and I ended up having a long chat with the school librarian who is a SF fan. She had not read my books, so this morning I brought copies of the AngeLINK series for her.

I'm SUCH a schmooze.

Anyway, I need to get writing. Caio, bellas!
