Well, after I cleaned out the upstairs tank, Johnny/Giant Girl instantly started to build a new bubble nest. He blew one bubble and there was South Africa nudging him to go do the dance with her. Who could resist, right? I watched them and almost had a nervous breakdown worrying that he didn’t even have enough places to put all the eggs she shot out. I thought maybe I should separate them and give him a chance to build a proper nest. Johnny chose to build his nest, quite wisely, away from the heater, filter, etc. But that meant the net separator didn’t fit on the side with all that stuff either. Meanwhile, they were mating and egg shooting. I was very stressed about it all. Then I reminded my self that I had no idea what to do with any fry that might actually come of all this nest building and egg shooting, so I tried to go Zen.

It all seemed to work out. The next time I checked in, Johnny was vigorously defending a wide nest. He seemed to change the shape of it constantly, and the eggs are so small that I really can’t tell if there’s really anything in there or not. I’ve decided, however, to just let it go for a while. My internet connection is still so spotty that I haven’t had an opportunity to discover exactly how long it will take the eggs to mature. But, betta don’t need terribly fresh water, so I’m going to try not disturb them for a while and see what happens. It keeps looking like Johnny’s nest gets narrower and narrower, but I’m going to try to keep the whole Zen thing going.

Today he seems to have built quite a fluffy nest again... a new one? A re-do of the old? And he's letting South Africa hang out underneath it, which makes me think that she's convinced the old eggs are gone and it's time to go again. She was pushing at him earlier, but he chased her off. I think maybe they might go again. As long as all this mating doesn't poop either of them out too strenuously, I see no reason to interfer. He never bites or tears her fins, and, even so, she has a plethora of hiding spaces to retreat to if it gets too much for her (although Johnny seems to be the one under the most pressure.)

Anyway, I seem to have picked up a new connection from a different neighbor, so I'm connected again. Plus, Mason goes back to school next week, so I'll have more time at the coffee shop one way or the other. When he's back in school, my first order of business is to update my schedule for 08. I've already signed up for MiniCON, but I suspect, given that naomikritzer is GoH of MarsCON, I should probably sign up for that as well -- and I just sent in a form to sign with RWA at the Public Library Association's conference in Minneapolis in March. Stuff to do!

I am waiting for you to write a romance novel about fish a la Watership Down or something. "He never bites or tears her fins..." certainly sdounds like a line from it.

You should make a YouTube video of the hot fish-on-fish action with a bad porno soundtrack.

Any chance you might come to CONvergence in July? Because of the con's ten year anniversary, it'll be four days long this year with a massive GoH list. It's going to be brilliant.

Sweet, thanks for the plug!

Maybe it's because I grew up around 'vergence, but it's always seemed just the right size a con to me. There are always 2-3 panels or events I'd like to be doing at any given time, and when I'm down to only one or two at smaller conventions I find I get bored. Plus the writing panels have been really cool the past couple of years.
