So, I go for days without and now here is my second post of the day....

I forgot to tell you all that I recieved "replies" from all my Congress critters, including Tina Smith. Both Amy Kloubuchar and Betty McCullom's were very boilerplate, "Thank you for reaching out, your comment is important to us...."

However.

I must have sounded like a complete crank because what I got back from Tina Smith afer my rant about her not having a separate Civil Rights catagory was basically: "The First Amendment allows you to say what you want."

Wow.

Okay.

I guess that means you'll need to submit your comments under every heading from now on? (I've always assumed those categories were to help route to the correct staffer - -so they all get the message?)

I got that too, or at least I got a weird and not entirely English-like disquisition on "the free speech."

Amy Klobuchar's response was completely generic -- "this important issue."

Goddamn cowards.

P.

Yes ...

I've noticed that politicians are increasingly poor communicators. Part of that has to do with volume, but really, they could at least tell the people or programs that sort their mail to batch things by topic for constructive results.

"Thank you for writing about the environment (or insert other topic here). You can find my party and personal platforms on environmental issues (or whatever) at (link). Follow current bills and other government activities on this topic at (link). Find politically active organizations in this field at (link). Subscribe to (party or personal) newsletter about this here. These are resources where you can work on these issues in (constituency area), (national), and (global). To learn more about this topic, explore (page of links to reliable educational materials). To influence (your political party here) based on your personal ideals, donate at (links to funds and causes) and/or volunteer at (links to party opportunities). You could even run for office yourself (instructions). If you find that your ideals do not match (your political party here) well enough, consider (link to page listing all parties) for a better match."

Or at least they could avoid insulting and offending people who bothered to write. Annoying correspondents seems like a reliable way to hemorrhage votes.

And then they wonder why so many citizens treat politics as a reality TV show. Because that's how most politicians are behaving.

I've seen a few exceptions. I met a guy at the county fair this summer who was running for local office. We stood there and yakked for ... 45 minutes maybe? until my partner's feet got tired of standing on concrete. We talked about community engagement, climate change, housing; he jotted notes for ideas I shared about possible solutions. It doesn't matter that I didn't live in his district, because I'm in the area and we had common causes. I wanted to encourage the good behavior.
