Reading Day
Aug. 12th, 2020 01:33 pmBecause I am prepping for my Loft class, I have been reading more than usual. I read several short stories, and watched some short film. The stories were:
”Going After Bobo” by Susan Palwick (Asimov’s, May 2000.)
“St. Juju” by Rivers Solomon (Verge, 2019.)
Justina Ireland’s “Theory of Flight” (Verge, 2019.)
“Aye, and Gomorrah” by Samuel Delaney.
“A Third of the Stars of Heaven” by Cadwell Turnbull (Lightspeed, 2017)
The short films were all from the African continent.Justina Ireland’s “Theory of Flight” (Verge, 2019.)
“Aye, and Gomorrah” by Samuel Delaney.
“A Third of the Stars of Heaven” by Cadwell Turnbull (Lightspeed, 2017)
From Kenya: “Pumzi” (2009, dir. Wanuri Kahiu). Approx. 20 minutes.
Set in Zambia, directed by a Ghanaian-American: “Afronauts” (2014, dir. Frances Bodomo), approx 15 minutes.
Both were free on YouTube. I highly recommend “Pumzi.” It had especially cool world building. “Afronauts” is based on a true story that’s fairly bizarre. Apparently, there was a Zambian space program in the 1960s, kinda. The guy behind it was motivated to spread Christianity to the moon and Mars, though. And their main astronaut was a fifteen year old girl. Here is an article about it, if you’re curious. http://www.goodshortfilms.it/en/articles/afronauts-il-programma-spaziale-dello-zambia
You? How you been?
