My son's very first day of school is today.  He's in class right now, and I'm trying desperately not to worry about my precious little bundle.  It's funny how all the horrors of schooling come back as you wave good-bye on that first day.  I keep thinking things like, "God, I hope no one teases him mercilessly.  I hope he still loves learning."

*sigh*  Being a parent is all about worry.

If it helps, the teasing and the like usually don't start until much later. Evan is in 4th and hasn't had any encounters like that yet. I'm dreading when they first arrive, but it is still down the line.

Don't worry. You've been incredibly supportive and encouraging with Mason - he will love learning because you have already instilled that in him. Now he is simply learning how to do it with different people in different ways. He's growing and becoming better. Be proud. :)

Our experience with preschool (ish thingie, sorta daycare, whatever, with the Reggio Emilia orientation, who knew that wasn't a kind of cheese) has been really good. The best part, for my sometimes-a-little-shy kid, is seeing the same kids every day. It's a great way to get to know each other. He is so fabulous about knowing how to interact with other children now.

But yeah, being a parent is all about worry.

First Day of School

Yes, parenting IS about worry; but think of the good things about school - the thrill of the right answer, the relief of getting an assignment done, the "A" or "B" you really earned . . . The other kids are just as nervous today. I suspect teasing will take a while.

What a great day! I have vivid memories of both my kids' first days ever. My son was so excited to finally be going to learn to read! Poor guy, he was very disappointed the first day when they didn't teach him exactly that. He is, not surprisingly, a voracious reader now.
Tuesday was his first day of *high school* ::shudder:: He was trying to look cool and aloof when I made him stand next to his sister for a pic (she'd made him a shirt declaring "I <3 My Senior Sister"). But he had a little grin on his face even as he ducked his head and hid behind his bangs.
Apparently, he is cool enough to have survived his first freshman day without any teasing. The teasing comes and goes. We've found it very effective to teach the kids that they can choose to stop being friends with people who are mean to them. They don't take much crap from anybody now, and they're both very nice to the little kids in the neighborhood who all seem to idolize them. Good luck to Mason! I hope he has a great year.

I did the exact same thing! Glad to know it's not just me.

That's one of the sweetest things I've read in a while. My first day at school, I didn't realise I was at school; I just thought my Mum had taken me somewhere to play with some new people and cover everything in reach with poster paint. You know, I miss those days.

the teasing comment reminded me of this website that i'm looking into doing a service project for...

http://www.rainbowrumpus.org/

he's a little young for it, but some of the things look really intriguing anyway. something to keep in mind IF the teasing starts...also...you should tell us how his first day went =)
