lydamorehouse: (ichigo hot)

For those following along on Shawn's details, the information will be under the cut. We had another long night. Shawn asked me to say overnight to keep her company, which I'm glad I did. It's so hard when you're migraine-y to make sense of anything, so we did a lot of talking and reminding and reminding. So, here's what we know. There is good news. Shawn's belly soreness is at a minimum She had a food setback yesterday, but is tolerating clear liquids. So, we are making today the goal of being excellent at clear liquids so they will move us up to.... (drum roll, please!) ... FULL liquids.

After full comes soft, and ever upward.

Which is why this is SUCH a long hospital stay.

The migraine stuff continues, but the doctors really only care to the extent that they'd like to make Shawn comfortable so she can rest. Shawn really wants to talk to a migraine specialist because she's developed a new kind of cluster headache and it comes with all sorts of scary new symptoms (but we already know there's no tumor, because of yesterday's? day before's? MRI.) But, the doctors' goals here are get Shawn eating normally so she can get OUT of the hospital, where she can consult migraine specialists/ neurologists at her leisure. This is hard because the MOST DISTRESSING thing for Shawn right now is her weird new auras, especially as they seem to be accompanied by menopause symptoms.

I left the hospital to teach class. Given that, it went pretty well. I have a generally great group of students, despite one, who yesterday, decided to tell me he "didn't buy it" about the idea that protagonists need to protag, and that conflict should rise (internally and externally) as the story progresses. To me, that seems kind of basic? But, I guess his favorite book is Great Gatsby, which I pointed out is not science fiction (or a book, frankly, that MOST people read for fun,) but, yeah, okay, there are always exceptions. Not sure why he decided to challenge me, but I'm not going to say 'my way or the highway' because this is writing and everyone does it differently and different things work for different readers.

That was just annoying, however, because I have zero f*cks to give right now.

Dude was lucky that I didn't just smile and say, "So... how many books have you published, then?" But, I wasn't ENTIRELY raised in a barn and that would not be productive. Beside, maybe he will prove me wrong and write an amazing book where nothing happens, the protagonist is only ever acted on, and there is zero internal or external conflict.

Only one more class to teach, but, unfortunately, Monday I start my teen class. Shawn is likely to still be here so that sucks.
