After making the connection that Sean’s work’s water pipes (as well as my friends Betsy and Warren’s garage water pipes), Naomi’s dryer, and Café Amore’s espresso steamer all had to do with Mercury going retrograde in a water sign (Pisces), I thought, “Wow, am I lucky I dodged that bullet.”

Then I spilled coffee on my laptop.

It was a stupid accident. Mason and I were using the Riverview Café’s WiFi to look up movies of sharks and I reached for the coffee at the same time he reached for the sharks book and the cup went over. Lots of people rushed to help mop up the spill. I didn’t really think the laptop had gotten hit with more than just a splash… so I kept using it. After about another ten minutes I couldn’t use the right hand side of the keyboard – the letters wouldn’t appear (or, worse, random ones would.) I shut it down right away, but I’m deathly afraid the damage has already been done. Last night, Shawn and I took it apart to inspect for wet spots/obvious problems. We found a pool of water in the battery compartment, which I’m hoping is the only issue. I’m letting it dry out for twenty four hours, and then I’ll try it again.

Fingers crossed.

The good news is that it certainly works well enough that even if the keyboard is toast, I can still retrieve all of Bloody Charming. Even failing that, I’ve been such a slacker with writing that I don’t think I’m that far behind on what’s been saved on my pen drive. Still, it’s a big fat hassle.

*sigh*

As a bonus, I got an unscheduled night off from writing. I’m happy to say I squandered it. I did a crossword puzzle, read a chapter in Plutonium Blonde, and went to bed early.

Yike!

If the problem turns out to be just with your keyboard, that's usually a pretty easy part to replace. You can generally find spare keyboards cheap on ebay if you search for your model number; I replaced my Toshiba board for $15 the last time I had that issue.

When is Mercury going out of @#*&ing retrograde?

Should I postpone my purchase of a new washer until it does?

When did it go into retrograde? Can I also blame Mercury for my fall on the ice?

I thought it was Mercury Crossing, and now I find out it's gone Retro!!! Oy!

And here, I thought the burst water pipe was because our custodian is a nitwit and left the outside water lines turned on through that ten day below zero spell...

So far the only water issue we've had is a backed up kitchen drain that had to be augered. Knock on wood that's the extent of it.

Hope the computer lives to compute another day.

Stop reading now if you don't want to hear what you should do next time.

You may have already figured out that you shouldn't keep using it. You should gently try to blot up as much of the liquid as you can. In the case of a laptop. And then you should try turning it upside down. Okay...so that's a lot easier when it's just a keyboard, but then again, the cost of replacing a keyboard is much less than the cost of replacing a laptop, so the extra effort may well be worth it. The goal here is to keep the liquid from getting inside and to encourage it to dry off as quickly as possible.

Let's try again. In the case of a laptop, you should probably turn it off.
