Aquatic Animals – The Expander Pak
Jan. 22nd, 2007 10:06 amBecause I’m a complete freak, I couldn’t go to PetSmart for _just_ the one item we needed. No, I had to come home with aquatic animals: the expander pack. I bought a glass shrimp and a snail. The glass shrimp is creepy cool. Its body is nearly completely transparent and so all you see when you’re looking for him (Jacques, named after the cleaner shrimp in Finding Nemo) all you can usually spot is his black, bulbous eyes. As you know, Bob, goldfish eat shrimp. This shrimp, however, is both crafty and far too big. He's figured out that the best place to hide is among the leaves of the plants. He’s currently happily ensconced in the downstairs goldfish tank.
I didn’t want to overwhelm our healthy tank, so I put Frieda the Snail (named after the dead fish, not, as it turns out a good omen,) into the upstairs hospital tank – which is still in its “conditioning” phase (though we have not YET lost any more tetras.) Frieda was gigantic and spent her first (and last) forty-eight hours busily investigating the walls, substrate and plants of the hospital tank. By yesterday morning, it was the big Gucci-Gucci for poor Frieda the Snail.
I had no idea you could kill a snail. But if anyone could, it would be me.
Frankly, I'm surprised all four tetras are still hanging on. Dip, the gourami, is, of course, thriving. It's because Shawn finds him spooky. I informed Jacques that he also could look forward to a long and prosperous life, if only because Shawn looks at him and says, "Oh my god, he's one seriously ugly bug."
Speaking of magic, our New Year's coin magic is in full swing. Every year we place "silver" coins wrapped in gold silk outside our front door. On New Year's morning, we bring them in. The idea is to representationally bring money in the front door to encourage the universe to do the same. Anyway, after last year's fiasco (we forgot about the coins for two days... and all year long, money that was promised was slow in coming), I got up super early and brought those coins in first thing. So, on Friday a check arrived for my short story which will be appearing in the SF lesbian anthology.
