Though I did end up buying another “feeder fish,” this one (Fergus) is significantly larger. In fact, he is nearly the exact size as Joe (our remaining original fish). We bought Fergus from World of Fish, and the best part of that was watching the staff person capture the exact fish we wanted. This guy had mad fish netting skillz. I did like the fish at aWoF, except that I did notice some fin rot on the official “comet tailed” goldfish, so we bought from a different tank. Fergus seems to be adjusting well – Joe actually noticed Fergus (he ignored the additions of Gill and Nemo) and seemed, in fact, quite enamored of him? Her?

Gill is doing well in his hospital tank and we bought a product named “PimaFix,” which is supposed to help with all number of bacterial and fungal infections (inside and out.) Also, we went back to PetSmart and bought a bubbling feature so Gill would have oxygen while he waits out his week of quarantine. Gill seems to be quite zippy, so I have some hope for his survival. (Ah, man’s last and greatest affliction = hope.)

Thanks to everyone who suggested other fish. If we’d had a complete die off, I would seriously consider the suggestions to buy different kinds of fish. I’ve heard very good things about the molly, for instance. So perhaps later. Fergus did cost me all of $1.00, so he’s a more expensive breed than our 12 centers. He is exact same kind of fish, which all my books say is ideal. (I guess comets can be too zippy and aggressive to mix with really fancy goldfish.) Mason and I were kind of hoping they’d have a kind of goldfish called a shubunkin (sp?), but they didn’t. Fergus, however, is pretty like a shubunkin (which are basically calico common goldfish) – he has a black stripe on his back, which compliments nicely Joe’s black tipped fins.

I’ve been to World of Reptiles (it’s quite close to our house) and it seems like a great place to get really weird animals. I didn’t really notice their fish, but Dave’s story makes me think that they might be good, hardy stock. Again, should we need to, I’ll definitely try there.

The reason we have a hospital tank is because I realized that one of my favorite parts of this hobby is actually the growing of live plants (and, more importantly, the friends who gifted us the original ten gallon tank, had a spare they decided to donate too.) I’ve been using it to grow plants from cuttings. Aquariums for Dummies (yes, I really bought that book) says that the conditioning period is hard because nobody really wanted to look at an empty fish tank. Turns out, I do. In fact, the whole experience of going Zen while staring at fish actually happens to me when I’m watching the water (and bubbles) make the plant leaves wave. I’d really hoped never to use the hospital tank for anything other than plants, but I’m happy we had it for Gill. He really seems a lot zippier. I suspect, too, that Joe may have been bullying him. Joe had a tendency to push the smaller fry around.

Fish personalities. Who knew?

Oh, and I got my page proofs read (the deadline is today) for Tate’s second vampire novel, only I forgot to take them with me this morning when I drove Shawn to work (we only have one car). Then, our stupid mother-lovin’ car decided to have a break down and now I’m car-less. Kinko’s is within busing range, so I will probably take Mason on a bus ride later today. Luckily, he thinks going on the bus is a fantastic treat.

As a reward for finishing, Shawn and I watched the first two episodes of the second season of “Lost” (my newest old TV obsession). I’m actually a bit concerned that the show has jumped the shark for me. There are some pretty startling coincidences that are going to have to be explained, and quickly, or I’m going to think that the writers just got overly enamored of their own cleverness.

Anyway, if any of the local folks who check into this blog want to hang out at a bar with me on Sunday, I’ll be at O’Gara’s in Saint Paul at the 2nd Foundation reading get-together from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm. (Check my web site, if you need the address or phone number for O’Gara’s). Also, at 6:00 pm on Monday the 8th , I’ll be at the Barnes & Noble at the Mall of America talking with the romance book club about Tate’s first novel. Since I’m not feeling like dressing up, I may do the Lemony Snicket thing and say that I’m standing in for Tate who was too fabulous to come.

okay you gotta elaborate on the Lost comment. I'm totally addicted to that show (or at least was until it went into forever hiatus this season..)

Well, you're one up on me for thinking it might be just a mindgame experiment. I had to peruse online Lost forums to get that rumor;-)

I enjoy the show for its weirdness. But there are aspects that are getting to me. It's sort of a love-hate thing now. So many unanswered questions, and so many theories running around about the storyline. Sometimes it's facinating and sometimes it'd be nice to resolve a few things.

Heroes is kind of fun, the way 1st season of Lost was fun (and all episodes are available online right now because it's in repeat-hell til the end of the month).
