As part of the ritual of bedtime Mason gets "The Story of Going to Sleep." This started out as a kind of guided meditation to lull him to sleep with the sound of my/mama's voice. Now that Mason is talking, it's become a kind of interactive story (think: chose your own adventure for a three year old). He insists we start with "Once Upon A Time" and then often he becomes the hero of putting all the animals back in their proper places at the Minnesota Zoo.

Sometimes people Mason's been watching on TV or reading about come along with us. We have a CD from a visit to the Chicago Museum about the dinosaur Sue. Last night, Sue (and Sue's ghost) tagged along. And it was Halloween. That's not the point, however, is that Mason informed me that Sue and Sue's ghost didn't come last time because they were "at writer's group."

"Oh," I said, "Like ima sometime is" (I'm ima and Shawn is mama.)

"Yes," he said.

"What kind of books does Sue write?" I asked.

"Books about dinaosaurs, and ghosts, and Iron Giant..."

"Ah," I said, "science fiction."

"Yep," Mason said.

"Does Sue get her picture in back of the books she writes like ima does?" I asked.

"Yep. With Neil Gaiman. Because she's famous."

Not, apparently, like me. *sigh*

How funny the world view at three! I'd posit that Sue is perhaps even more famous than Neil Gaiman.

And what, couldn't you and Sue collaborate on something? That'd be pretty cool.
