Okay, I MAY Just Survive 2009

So yesterday, I set myself a goal of writing 2,000 on my Tate novel so I could, well, not feel quite so much like I was ridiculously behind on that book. Guess what? I did it. I even went 400-some words over. That seems like a frigging miracle to me. If I can keep this up, steady, for 30 days, I could finish this book in a month and then have from February to June to finish up RESURECTION CODE.
That would be cool. It'll mean, however, that I'm going to have to really be disciplined... which is hard for a self-indulgent person like myself. I'd much rather, well, you know, play around. But, nope, Lyda is going to be Mz. Hard Nose 2009.
Just watch me.
In other news, I went to the gym today. Yowch.
Also, I think that at Wyrdsmiths on Thursday (it *is* this Thursday, right?) I'm going to hand out a short story I wrote some time ago for a military space anthology. Well, not terribly surprisingly, the anthology editor rejected it. I wasn't surprised because I think the idea is a good one, but my execution (as always with my attempts to write short peices) was a little weak. Maybe Wyrdsmiths will have some good ideas on how to make it suck less. BroadUniverse is having a "mailing party" starting on the 9th and I'd kind of like to be part of it. Although I don't have a LOT of time to devote to fixing up this story. Still, I hate having it sitting around in my directory and not going out to places.
Oh, and Mason's teacher told me a very funny story this morning, which I posted about over at Tate's blog. There's no keeping secrets when you have a five year old. Also, apparently, one of the things they're talking about right now in school is family, and they were talking about "family words." One of the kids suggested "Dad." Mason piped up with, "I don't have one of those. I have two moms." (There's another kid in class who has two moms as well.) So they had an impromtu discussion about different kinds of family. Mason's teacher seemed worried about it, but I thought it was a great way to introduce the ideas of tolerance and diversity.
Well, if I'm going to make my word count for the day, I have to go get started. Hope all y'all are having a great day on this sunny, snowy day!

Date: 2009-01-07 05:25 pm (UTC)I'm going to e-mail you about the random disclosures I was privy to in Molly's classroom one day while the teacher was out of the room. (Nothing mandatorily reportable, mind you. But two moms are frankly pretty mundane in Minneapolis / St. Paul.)

Date: 2009-01-07 08:53 pm (UTC)Interestingly, I just wrote a whole long thing in my recent Tate book about how much cooler and artsy Minneapolis is than Saint Paul.
But back to Mason's class... keep in mind that Mason's teacher hasn't been teaching for very long. She's very young, and a graduate of Stout. (Wisconsin is MUCH more square, wouldn't you agree? *TEASE*) Anyway, I don't think she quite yet has a grip on how weird people's lives are... you know?
