Fishy Update

A quick note about the fish since its been a long time. The downstairs fish Joe and Fergus have started loosing their black markings as they get bigger. Is this normal? Did our housesitter secretly replace them when we were gone? (I don't really believe the last part, as I've been watching them slowly change over the last few weeks.) I've been feeding them a more varied diet thinking that might improve their color... though it's not as though the orange isn't bright and shiny, just that the black is slowly... eroding?
The new thirty gallon tank is still conditioning. I've only got it half filled (half empty?) because the bubbler feature in it is broken. I thought the exposed plaster might leak contaminates into the water and figured I'd better keep the water level below the break just in case. Given my history with fish, it's probably better safe than sorry. I'm super anxious to start putting plants and features in the new tank. Shawn has a theme in mind, however, (think Planet of the Apes with a half-sunken Statue of Liberty, crashed space ship and floating satellite,) and wants to be part of the shopping. Unfortunately, she has a day job. Oh the humanity.
The upstairs tank still houses a number of Malyasian needle snails and our only ghost-glass shrimp Happy. (The downstairs shrimp all appear to have been eaten by our now gigantic goldfish.) If we decide to keep the upstairs tank, I might want to add more shrimp. Happy is fairly entertaining to watch. When he gets hungry, like he did last night, he swims frantically to the surface looking for flakes to catch. If I drop some in, it's really neat to watch him grab at the flakes with his claws and stuff the bits into his mouth. The best part is that afterwards I can still see the color of the flakes inside his see-through stomach. There's like a little pinkish-brown spot inside him. Cool, huh? And, more importantly, Happy seems unaffected by the Ick or whatever horrible disease has taken over that tank. Maybe more shrimp would be do-able. It'd be fun to have a whole colony of them.
In other news, Mason and I stopped by his new school today to pick up a packet of information for the upcoming school year. The best part was a list of... (drum roll, please)... SCHOOL SUPPLIES!!! I always loved getting school supplies when I was a kid and am now excited to pass on that tradition to Mason. Also, Mason was very cute at the school. When a teacher in the office asked him his name, he said, "Mason Gale Morehouse Rounds." She said, "Hi, Mason and a bunch of other names!" Then, when I asked Mason if he was excited about school, he said, "Yes, except for the missing you parts." The teacher overheard and thought that was quite precious. So did I.
