This morning we discovered Tetra4 (they don't get names, there's too many of them, kind of like BORG) swimming near the top. Not dead, but with a funky growth covering his tailfin. I went downstairs to fetch the fungicide, then thought... damn, I don't REALLY want to blast this tank and the living inhabitants in this tank AGAIN, do I? Of course, chosing not to do that meant either letting Tetra4 die slowly or... euthenizing him.

I decided to euthenize him. So, we scooped him up and put some clove oil in with him -- to anethetize him. Then, I stuck him in the freezer.

Oh my god I'm evil.

And it gets worse.

Then, after the "Gucci! Gucci!" I decided now was a good time to clean out the upstairs tanks and zip! Sucked up a tetra into the vacuum (we have a nifty tank vacuum that's battery powered. It's not the siphon, but has a little sock that catches the gross bits and returns the water to the tank). Only, I didn't realize Tetra3 was there, and I took the vacuum out for several minutes. Then, when I started it up again, I was like, "Hey, there's something blue in there. Blue? Oh shit!" Dead tetra.

"Gucci, gucci" and an "I'm really sorry I killed ya, buddy."

Tetra2 was looking pretty sick too. Kind of doing the loopty-loop of a fish with air-bladder problems. We'll see if she lives. But, because tetra really don't like to live alone, I went back to A World of Fish and bought eight more.

Pretty soon their going to stop selling to me.

If it's any consolation

It took us a good year-and-a-half to get a stable tank. It was so bad that we started naming the fish after companies that we didn't much like. Only one of the original dozen or so fish that went in over that time is still with us, little Enron, who's tough as old nails.

Oh, that's a magnificent irony.

I don't remember them all, but yes there was a Wal-Mart. I think he was the third death, right after World-Com.
