Regarding "Mentioning Unmentionables": Have you read Mary Robinette Kowals Lady Astronaut books? At one point in one of them, they have to dispose of a body in deep space by freezing it solid and hitting it with a hammer to break it into little chunks, and apparently this is something NASA actually considered?
