For a convention, I do not think this is necessarily a bad thing. For a club, it has problems - it makes it difficult to recruit new members.
I've thought about Minn-StF relates to this - we're accepting, but not very welcoming.
To expand - if someone new walks into a Minn-StF meeting, we, as a group, are very unlikely to do much to pull the person into our interactions. Some of us are much better than others, I think it's gotten better recently (that being the last 5-10 years, as opposed to when I got involved in the 80s). We'll accept whatever they are, but we don't do a good job of pulling them into our games or our conversations.
Conventions make the problem better and worse simultaneously. You need either a certain degree of extrovert, ADD, or a native guide. Personally, I need a native guide. I was fortunate that when I started going to Minicon, I came with PFRC/GT, so I had a lot of native guides! But I agree, I do not expect the convention to provide that.
