Have you looked at any of Cornelia Funke's work for Mason? My 6 year old son LOVED 'Dragon Rider'--my kid doesn't read as well as Mason, and I read it to him aloud a year or so ago. He was begging for more all the time. I'm thinking that it might be more age-appropriate in tone and subject than the Star Wars books.
